EU Answer to Humber Pilots Dispute - "Don't make Ports another Railtrack" Diana Wallis MEP

A European Union Directive may hold the answer to the dispute between the Humber Pilots and ABP (Associated British Ports),

says local Euro-MP Diana Wallis.

This week the Humber Pilots voted in favour of industrial action as a consequence of a long-running dispute over employment rights.

Diana Wallis, Lib Dem Euro-MP for Yorkshire and the Humber, met with the Humber Pilots recently and told them that the European Parliament is considering a Commission Directive which would go some way to alleviating the current dispute.

"Part of the dispute between the two parties is linked to the issue of safety," says Diana Wallis.

"One of the concerns that the Humber Pilots have is that ABP, as nominated 'competent harbour authority' have responsibility for safety on the estuary, and also, as a commercial company are answerable to shareholders.

"The new EU Directive states that the port authority must be a different body to that which provides the port services so that safety standards would be independently guaranteed and not liable to be compromised by profit motives.

"The last thing we want is to create another Railtrack in our ports, and this directive should prevent that."
