12.00.00am GMT Fri 12th Mar 2004

Speaking today, Friday, at a Citizenship Conference in Hull aimed at young people, local Euro MP, Diana Wallis, said that yesterday's bomb blast in Madrid was an attack on the whole of European democracy.

At the 'Speak Out! Conference on European Citizenship' at the University of Hull she said to pupils from several Hull and East Riding schools that, 'it was important that all European citizens pull together in the face of these terrible events.' She urged people to 'use the ballot box to defeat the people of violence.'

The 'Speak Out! Conference on European Citizenship' was organised by the Institute of Citizenship and the International Resources Centre for Schools and Colleges based at the University of Hull.
