As results from today's referendum in Switzerland on the extension of the labour accord with the European Union to the ten new EU member states clearly showed a Yes vote, Diana Wallis MEP, President of the European Parliament's delegation to Switzerland, said:

"I am delighted with the result; it edges Switzerland yet closer to the EU."

"It marks a significant watershed in Swiss-EU relations and it is arguable that the bilateral route is now exhausted, certainly a fundamental think is needed on the Swiss side about what comes next; if indeed anything. For the EU, this whole relationship with a non-member state albeit a much respected one, is perhaps becoming over burdensome."
