Euro MP delight with referendum result but 'Swiss still need rethink on EU relations'8.25.01pm BST (GMT +0100) Sun 25th Sep 2005
As results from today's referendum in Switzerland on the extension of the labour accord with the European Union to the ten new EU member states clearly showed a Yes vote, Diana Wallis MEP, President of the European Parliament's delegation to Switzerland, said: "I am delighted with the result; it edges Switzerland yet closer to the EU." "It marks a significant watershed in Swiss-EU relations and it is arguable that the bilateral route is now exhausted, certainly a fundamental think is needed on the Swiss side about what comes next; if indeed anything. For the EU, this whole relationship with a non-member state albeit a much respected one, is perhaps becoming over burdensome."
