Local Euro MP welcomes new law to clamp foreign drivers

Local Euro MP, Diana Wallis, has welcomed the announcement that police are due to be given new powers to clamp foreign drivers who break British laws and refuse to pay fines.

Under a new amendment to the Road Safety Bill, police would be able to hand out on-the-spot fines to overseas motorists who break the law. Drivers who do not pay will have their cars clamped at the side of the road.

Liberal Democrat Euro MP, Diana Wallis, had taken up the issue on behalf of constituents concerned about the apparent flouting of rules by foreign lorry drivers with the Chief Constables of the region's four police forces and also with the Minister concerned.

Ms. Wallis said:

"I welcome this announcement. A high proportion of accidents on the regions' roads are caused by foreign lorry drivers. It is important that foreign lorry drivers are not able to ride roughshod over our road traffic laws just on the back of the view that they can get away with it. Foreign lorry drivers often give false addresses to avoid prosecution, and are never chased up. "
